Has anyone found that the finger or thumb sucking has caused odd skin or calluses on their LO's fingers?

P has sucked her middle and 4th finger since she was tiny. She only does it when she's going off to sleep and is the reason she's such a brilliant self settler. You literally plonk her in bed and that's that. I've noticed though that the end of her middle finger has got very had, callused skin on in. It doesn't seem sore but it's not very nice and i dont want it to get work.

Anyone found this and found it sorte itself out over time? Is there anything i can put on her finger to help do you think or is it just one of those thing? I don't want her to stop the finger sucking really as it's the only way she knows to settle herself i think but equally i don't want her fingers affected long term.

S is still a thumb sucker at 4, whenever he touches anything soft (even his baby brother!). By some miracle it's not effected his teeth or skin really. Does she chew her fingers? Sounds like it if the skin is hard. I wouldn't worry, I'm sure it'll right itself when she stops

I used to finger suck and had a weird callous on my finger for a while after I stopped. You can just about still see it now but it has never caused me any problems. My little A finger sucks - it is not something I am encouraging her to stop as it is a bl**dy god send!!!!

Absolutely RS, that's how i feel about it! Just noticed the callous though and it worried me a bit. Hopefully it's just something that will right itself as she gets older and stops. My younger brother did it until he was quite old....10/11 (at night!) and his hands are fine now. I should ask my mum if he had anything on them when he was small.

WH - how cute that he does it when he touches little S!!!

I sucked my thumb until 10 too. Happy to say I never needed a brace!

N is a finger sucker too, he does it mainly for sleep but also when he is over excited or anxious in a situation. He had some hard skin on them a while back but it went and never came back. I'm so worried about his teeth though, I check them every few months and convince myself he will have buck teeth! The dentist said they really need to stop by age 4-5 else it will affect their adult teeth too but then as WH said hers weren't affected and I know adults now whose teeth are fine so just have to hope I guess. A is now desperately trying to get her thumb in her mouth and I don't know whether to be happy about it or not.

Little S is also finding his thumb, at least they can self settle and always find it unlike a dummy I guess. Shame there's no way to take it off them when you want them to stop! Our dentist wants S to stop now too but didn't rate those thumb guards oddly

I know a LO at Playgroup who sucks his index finger. The skin between the base and first knuckle is red raw, bleeds sometimes, always scabby as it be er has a chance to heal. His mum had him at the GP who gave a cream for it but said he can't have it while he still sucks the finger - so waist of time really!

That's the trouble LR, i can imagine any creams etc she can't put in her mouth. And i can't/dont want to stop her doing it full stop!
