Just had a message from my midwife saying that my urine test results came back and that I've got an infection and need antibiotics.
The prescription should be ready tomorrow.
I am worried now, should I be? Have any of you been treated for urine infection in pregnancy? What sort of antibiotics did you get?
I do not trust our GP and am worried that they prescribe the wrong type . . .

Thanks for your responses. I panicked when I picked up the voicemail from the midwife DH said that he will check it all out for me and asks at the pharmacy when he picks up my prescription. I'm not finding it hard to pee or anything so it's a bit of a shock to me,but glad it's got picked up and will be treated. I was worried that it could harmthe baby but the nhs says that it will cause no harm I will let you know tomorrow what I've received on my prescription xxx

You could try an otc remedy like cymalon / cystpuritin first if you are worried about the antibiotics... I used to get frequent cystitis flare-ups & these used sort it out fine (& soothe the pain & constant full bladder feeling) very quickly.
Drink cranberry juice to help prevent re-occurrence... & theres this new product over here (in the states) called cystex which is like a super concentrated cranberry juice that you only have to take a teaspoonful a day to prevent uti's... If you can get that in the UK that would def be worth looking into.

So ladies, after a load of hassle and GP chasing I've got my prescription. She prescribed Macrodantin 50mg (Nitrofurantoin). Anybody else had these?
It says online that they are safe to take and it was confirmed by the pharmacist also, but it also says that it could be associated with birth defects?
I think I have to take them because I am finding it hard to pee today

Ive had those before chick. I don't think they'd prescribe anything if the benefits didn't outweigh the risks. I had several doses of antibiotics whilst preg and took heartburn meds for months. I had bags and bags of antibiotics through a drip both before I had my section and after then was having daily injections, and loads of oral pain killers and antibiotics alongside the drip when I was breast feeding n Lexie turned out just perfect. I worried loads bout how much they were pumping me full of and passing it on to her but they wouldn't give it if u didn't really need it xx hope u feel better soon, I've been pissing razor blades for 3 weeks but they say my urines clear so must just be trauma from catheter, so I feel ur pain hun xx

I've also called the NHS helpline and they passed me onto an out of hours GP. Hes just called and said it was ok as long as it was taken in early pregnancy and not when I'm in labour. Will start tomorrow and see how it goes .....

I had burning sensation when I wee'd and was wee'ing loads. The GP did a strip test which didn't show anything up but still prescribed me antibiotics just in case. I assume if she would prescribe "just in case" that there wouldn't be any adverse effects on me or the baby and the chemist confirmed the same when I asked him.
Hope it clears up for you soon. My mum always says to drink barley water (like the cordial types you can get) when you have an infection too and it always seems to ease it for me. Another tip (tmi alert girls!) is that if it really is burning like nobody's business is to run a jug of warm water down your tum and let it go between your legs as you are wee'ing as it eases the burning sensation (My mum was an incontinence advisor at a care home). My mum mentioned some herbal tea, but I think it was cranberry tea Will get some cranberry juice this weekend. I started the antibiotics this morning so hope they'll start working pretty sharpish. I am suffering from pretty bad sickness today and the side effects are also supposed to be vomiting and nausea so I they don't make me feel worse. I have noticed that I am finding it harder to pee, no burning or anything, it is just not coming out.... well, at least not during the day but I have no problem peeing at nigh ha ha ha
