I took H to be weighed today and hv asked i how weaning was going. I said we'd only just started as he's not q 6 months and she said that because I had delayed his weaning I shouldn't be giving him purée and should only give him mushed food or solids now and try and get lots of flavours into him quickly as the delay meant we needed to skip stage one and rush or he won't catch up
im fuming! Advice is to wait until 6 months until weaning and she made me feel like I had failed my child as I didn't wean him earlier. She implied if I didn't rush the weaning now and move on to lumpy food I'd damage him.
its made me really angry so I just needed to vent. My hv are so rubbish. She also said that despite Hs allergic reaction to dairy lady week it's probably nothing and I should give him yogurts anyway and she's sure it will be fine!

She obviously hasn't phrased it well but she's right in that you don't need to purée everything at that stage, chewing is a very important action for them to learn and important for speech development.
However I'd completely ignore her advice re giving dairy and go and speak to your GP.

basically what isis said, she is right but probably hasnt worded it right, weaning with purees was done when LOs weaned earlier around 16 weeks and their digestive systems couldnt take lumpier things, babies at 6 months should be able to tolerate normal foods iyswim and so if you BLW then they are given whole foods but if you choose to spoon feed baby then advice is to give mashed rather than purree. she probably should have explained it better, you havent done anything wrong dont worry

My HV suggested I needed to push B's weaning as I waited till 23 weeks. She said I should be having her on more than one meal a day - I've been weaning her for 2 weeks and she sis only just comfortably taking that I'm not upping it yet!

I think you need to follow your babies lead and offer food & see what & how much they take. You're not weaning late so no need to rush anything but at the same time as you've waited there's no reason to start with purees or baby rice or porridge that has no calorie content (or taste!!). I followed the BLW route (giving real food, no purees or spoon feeding, just whatever we were eating) & started offering 3 meals a day whenever she was awake. She choose to eat as much or as little as she wanted at each meal. Hope it goes well over the next few weeks

Thanks everyone. I'm sure she meant well but when she said I'd delayed it was as though I'd done it on purpose rather than that being their guidelines.
I will def try and incorporate more 'solid' or lumpy food, we've only been going a few days.
I. Just feel there are so many conflicting messages with weaning its hard to know what to do

There are a lot of conflicting info out there. For weaning I just ignored my hv's who've been trying to persuade me to stop bf for a long time. It all depends on when you start weaning. If you start early then you need to give purees & start slowly. If you wait until 6 months then they're able to feed themselves (1 of the reasons to wait) & can handle more solid food if you're comfortable with that. Just take it a day at a time & enjoy it x
