Little H is rapidly approaching 6 months so we are going to get started with weaning very soon. Up until now he has been exclusively bf and on the occasions we've tried a bottle, he has refused it. We are hoping that once he gets used to eating that he will be more receptive to the bottle or cup. I'm just wondering how it worked for others, especially those that had previously had bottle refusal? Did you wean and transfer to bottles at the same time? Did it go smoothly? How did you go about dropping the feeds and did mixing bottle and breast work ok - I'm wondering if I will just have to stop bf completely so as not to confuse him and then express for a while so I don't get engorged. I'm quite worried about it all tbh, I'm ready for him to start taking a bottle now and am concerned it's all going to be a bit stressful.
Thanks ladies. I'm sorry I haven't been able to get on properly for a while and now I'm coming back with questions!! I'll be popping out in a bit so apologies if I don't get back straight away. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Are you planning on BLW or purée?
Remember breast milk or formula should still be his main nutrition until over 12 months old. Are you planning on swapping to formula now if you want to stop bfing? I would try introducing the milk in a cup now rather than a bottle.

Thanks for replying LR.
I'm planning to puree and yes I'm planning to swap to formula. I'm just concerned about getting him to take it. We've bought a cup so maybe we will try that first instead of a bottle.

No advice as I still ebf even though weaning but how did he get so big?!?!! He's surely only a couple of months old!

We switched to formula at six months and what worked for us was giving him milk in a doidy cup alongside his food. It was a bit hit and miss for a few days as he got used to it and he used to spit most of it out, but I carried on BFing morning and night for a few weeks and just accepted the fact that a few days of reduced milk wasn't going to do too much harm. Sure enough he was drinking a proper amount after about a week. He now has all his day formula in a cup and a bottle at bedtime, which he started to take when I stopped BFing altogether. Think he still wanted the comfort/closeness just before bed.

Crashing in as I have the same ponderings!
Daft question but if you put milk in a cup and bypass bottles, do you still have to steralise?? I know nowt about steralising and haven't been near a bottle yet, so I'm embarrassingly clueless...

I didn't bother with sterilising, just washed cups in dishwasher or rinsed out with boiling water after washing up, but I'm not sure if I was doing the right thing!

OK, thanks Chimps!

Hi LM - I know!! It's going so fast, too fast, I can't keep up! How is your little H getting on with the weaning? I hope it's going well x
Thanks Chimps, that's really useful. I don't have a doidy cup so will add that to the list. I hope it goes as well for us. It's probably another one of those things that I need to be relaxed over, but I find it sooooo hard!!
Gopher - crash away, I was wondering the same thing. Would be nice to skip the sterilising stage altogether. Good luck with your weaning.

H is doing ok with the weaning although its slow going and we are free styling a bit. He seems to have little interest in food but makes an effort to at least try bits. Still bf loads though!
I don't know where the time is going its scary!

Aww bless him, am sure he will gradually take more of an interest - at some point, apparently, our boys will be eating us out of house and home!!
