R is almost 4 now but last year I'd say she was still into Peppa pig and just starting to show an interest in Disney princesses. She loved (and still does) baby dolls and prams and all the things that come with it - bottles, nappies etc.
Tea sets? Toy groceries etc that she could play shops with?

My Niece was 3 recently, and I got her some Hello Kitty (obvs) skates which she LOVES, plus she is into Disney Princesses, especially dressing up stuff.
J is really into his dolls and pram, especially the accessories that go with it - nappies, bottle etc, all in a little changing bag.

Mg friends little girl will be 3 in September, I've not seen it but she's obsessed with frozen, she has the soundtrack which she asks to have on everytime they are in the car. She loves her baby doll and pram but her latest thing (since Xmas) is tea parties, she has a tea set that all packs away in a little bag and all her toys and dolls are always having tea! Last time I saw her we bumped into my friend at the retail part and M had one of the plastic cups with her, just walking round holding it!

I'd go for craft stuff myself. My daughter was never that interested in her dolls but give her a nice craft set and she was happy as anything!
She also liked play food and things like that. Or books have always been popular.
Or something outdoorsy for the summer would be good.
