Only 8 weeks and we are going slowly with name discussion but a few keep popping up. We liked Charlotte but have gone off it now and also love Alice which may end up as a middle name if not a first name. OH came up with the above two and they have been met with raised eyebrows from my sister when mentioned lol. I love them, not made up and not popular at all. April was on my list for B but it's a name I forgot about until he mentioned it. He asked me not to laugh, bless him.
So yes, what do we think MD?

I really like Melissa. We have had it in our top 10 with all my pregnancies.
I don't like April. I can't really give you a definite reason as to why. Mostly now it reminds me of April Jones. (Not such a big deal really except my 4 year old still asks me sometimes if they have found her yet)
Not a huge fan of Melissa if it gets shortened to Mel, Lissi is cool though. I'm ambivalent on April. Love Charlotte particularly shortened to Lottie, and my god daughter is an Alice!

Oh Heartnurse, I didn't think of April Jones :o( Very good point. I love Madeline but the obvious connection put me off....that and OH doesn't like it!
Melissa would be a Lissi or Lissa, not a Mel although I am thinking I won't get a say in that when she is older :/ In some ways that is what is putting my off Charlotte as I wouldn't like Charlie as a shortening, it would be Lottie.
I am getting more and more in love with Alice!

I love Melissa. I'm not keen on Mel though, but I don't think that would be used for a little girl anyway, it's more whether you'd be happy if she was to adopt it herself when she was older
Alice is lovely, we can't have it with out surname as it sounds odd but i think it's beautiful. Classic but not popular. Lovely. We didn't tell anyone in real life our choices as i wasn't interested in their opinions. Much easier to discuss between you and use here for a sounding board/ideas where needed.

I have a cousin called Melissa (31), some of her friends call her Mel but most people use her full name. I like it.
I'm not keen on April, like hn, I can't give a reason why, I just don't.
I've always liked Alice, I think its, lovely. I like it the best from your 3 choices.

MrsE, definitely happy for Mel when she is older :o) I love Victoria but the thought of Vicky when older puts me off (no offence to any here!)
We aren't going to tell anyone out definite choices Autumn as I want to do a big name reveal when nobody can say anything lol. I do like Alice a lot.
Thankyou everyone, at least they weren't detested! ;o)

Snow White, I definitely think it is a name from that generation...my generation I should say as I am 31 too! lol

I like april not so keen on melissa. Its what you like though! I regret telling people my short list as people just cant help but give their opinion!

Ummm not fussed on April or Melissa, but liking Alice. I'd probably spell it Alys though (welsh way). I currently LOVE the name Alais, but only came across it recently in a screen adaptation of The Labyrinth. Would be top of my list for the non-existent no. 3.

Willow, I think the raised eyebrows from my sister made me think about not saying another word, I told her that it's a good job this is our baby then and not hers. Ho hum.

Ahh thankyou Welsh One, I knew I had seen it spelt that way! I like the spelling Alys but wondered if being in England she would have to spell it out for people all the time.
20/04/2013 at 22:15
I've taught an Alys in England. Don't think it was ever a problem regarding the spelling, but unless you tell people any different, I guess they would spell it Alice, but then my name can be spelt a number of names so I always have to spell that out anyway. I actually had 2 in my class at one time - Alys and Alice! Never taught any before or since strangely.

I am going to ask OH what he thinks of Alys :o)
20/04/2013 at 22:18
I work with a south African Alys and she pronounces it A-lees (so like our Elise). Having a name that needs spelling is a pain particularly when it comes to banks etc but I think spelling Alys is more likely to be pronounced incorrectly rather than misspelt in the first instance. I don't mind April, don't love it either though but prefer Melissa then Charlotte. Both names allow your daughter to decide which shortened version she prefers/suits when older.
Good luck deciding!

Thanks KittyKat! :o)
You all know of course that this will be a boy and therefore this is a moot topic! ;)

I like Alice best of the names you mention...how about Alyssa?
20/04/2013 at 22:25
Coco, my dad's ex wife was called Alicia so that is a bit close. Lovely though :o)

I don't like April, it's not particularly pretty in my mind.
Charlotte is popular, I know loads, four without having to think.
Alice is nice, as is Melissa.
