I only bought a few newborn things, rest was 0-3 He was 9lb 5 and long so some things were fine and some were to big for a while.
This time I'm not buying much in the way of clothes at all, just the basics. I've only bought 0-3 (I'm assuming this one will be bigger - not sure whty) and if there's a problem and we have a tiddler then one of us/someone will run out to Tesco or Asda and pick up a few bits in a smaller size.

We had newborn stuff which has lasted 2-3 weeks and S was 7lbs 3. She is now in mostly 0-3. The babygrows were the first to get too small and some of the little outfits still fit but not for much longer if she carries on guzzling!

I took newborn clothes to hospital for all three of mine (all 8lb babies) and it fitted them for a good few weeks.

With J, I was told he'd be big, so took 0-3 months stuff.
He outgrew those at 2 weeks old (he was 9lb 9oz, and long)

With mine I had some 0-3 size, she was bang on average for a girl, they were huge on her. H had to rush out and buy some others in a smaller newborn size. She was a slow grower though so I got lots of use out of them. I would wait and see myself. My friend's little boy was a huge nearly 12 pounder and she had to take back practically every present of clothes they were given as he'd outgrown the lot before he arrived!

My bump measured a week ahead throughout and A was 8lb12oz. I was worried about him not fitting newborn size but Tesco and Next both do up to 1 month size which is a good in between size if 0-3 months is too big - we had some newborn bits but otherwise stuck to 1 month, knowing that if he turned out to be tiny we could always go and buy more clothes once he arrived. A has long legs and has grown fast so he is over 10lbs already and is 4 weeks old today. So I'm glad we didn't buy much newborn as he's now in 0-3.
If I were you I'd have a few of each size but don't buy too much smaller stuff as I'd rather need to buy more than have loads of things he never got to wear.

I expected C to be fairly big (he was 9lb), so bought some new born, and some 1month (Next) - they lasted a few weeks.

I was convinced J would be a whopper like her sister but she was tiny.7lb 8oz and average length. D was straight into 0-3 whereas J used first size and mew orn for at least a month. Just make sure you have extra of both sizes in your bag or in the car if you need it.
I'd left bagged up extras for H at home so he knew where to find it.
S was 7lb 10 and was in newborn til about 8 weeks. She was only in 0-3 for a few weeks then she went into 3-6.
