Toddlers & Older Children <

Hi. I'm new to the site although i read the magazine.
My three year old daughter is showing more and more that she is left-handed and has been for quite some time. I dont mind this at all, some people say left-handers are artistic (she doesnt get that from me!) But her Grandma has started to put cutlery, crayons etc in her right hand and says it will affect her when she is older and at school. I dont agree, thats how she has formed and i dont want to change that.
When I was at junior school there was one girl in the whole school who was a leftie, and it seemed so special back then (I am 40 years old!) and the school had to buy special scissors!!!! I know that doesnt happen now.
Anybody else agree with me.

I am left handed, and although there are some things that can be a pain like scissors and tin openers etc you just learn to do it different. I wouldn't try and get her out of it. My eldest was showing signs of being left handed about te age of 3 and we though that at 3 thats it she will be a lefty but now shes nearly 5 shes a righty.
Also its not good to try and get them out of it, a couple of my friends who are older than me were forced out of being a lefty and they said it was a bit of an emotional battle, thn they were having to do something thaqt was not natural for them to do. and it was added pressure at school. and now in there adult life they feel like they have do something wrong if they use there left hand.
I also have a few friends that are muscians as well as lefties. I include myself in this, and things can be done differently but you can play just as well as a righty, and my left handed friend gray, is better than my husband and other friends who are right handed.
Just leave her be and she will find her own way!

Hi there Ant
I agree with the others when saying leave her be and she will fine.
Im a lefty to,i was like you say made to eat and write like a rite hander, didnt go down to well when my parents found out.My whole family are right handers and my mum did her best to show me the left hand way but i picked alot up on both. Id agree with being artistic,in the art sense,i love to draw and anything to do with graphics, art and design.I love to make and build things.
My son is a right hander like his dad and has no touble with me sometimes teaching him the opposite way(not intended when i do).
All the best with this.
