    Hello

Sorry if this has recently been covered, but I'm after a little bit of advice about the actual injection process. I always worry about them, so I'd like to be as prepared as possible.

I think I'm a little more worried this time, bcoz dd1 is older and more aware, so it may be a little more distressing for her.

I know it can vary between areas, but I was wondering where the actual injection is given, in thigh etc?

Is it a stinging one? I know you can't feel their pain, but I was wondering if hv or gp had mentioned it to you, as some sting when they go in.

Also, how do you hold your lo? My dds have only ever had injections in their thighs, and I have to sit them on my lap, one arm against my chest, hold one arm in one hand, and with my other hand hold the thigh down. Im curious bcoz obviously there is only so much restraint you can use, and I remember dd2s last injection some squirted out bcoz she wriggled so much.

Sorry if Im being ott, but thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks Lara, any info I can get the better. B has hers on the 13th lol
They never mentioned my dd2, so I haven't a clue when hers will be done, I might take her along to distract B

Rachel had hers done yesterday and it was in her thigh - didn't seem to bother her much at all, she was smiling and running around again a few seconds later!

    Hi,

in the info I was given by the doctors it said in the arm for over 1's and in the thigh.

But - it could vary - my lo had all her immunisations - under 1 in her thigh and over 1 in her arm but a friends lo has had them all in her leg. Sorry, not much help, my lo will have hers on the 22nd.
Also, the same nurse has done 4 sets of my lo's jabs and only once did my lo get really really upset and that time the nurse seemed in a different mood!

She warned me that the next set (at 3 years ?) could be worse because they are more aware and the best thing to do would be to tell them what is going to happen and that it might hurt so they are better prepared for it. I'm not sure how much my lo will understand at 18 months but she does understand alot so I will be warning her and taking a pack of chocolate buttons as a treat for being a good girl!

Will be interesting to see how they all go this month and if there are any reactions. My doctor reassured me that as the jab is not live my lo wont react to the actual stuff in it.

My lo has it next week - 2 days before his birthday so i'm praying it won't make him ill before his party!
I had it a couple of weeks ago, and it didn't hurt at all - and i'm rubbish with needles. Had it in my arm, but then maybe it's different for kids.
My arm hurt like hell for a week or so afterwards, but other than that no ill effects at all.
I'm a bit worried about how sore it was afterwards - lo won't like that at all so i'm just hoping it's not as bad for him.

Thanks so much for all the advice, its put my mind at rest about the not stinging.
I'll explain what's going to happen, I'm not sure how much she'll understand, but she knows what an ow is, and will squeeze/hold my hand when she's in pain, so I might give that a go.
I already feel guilty bcoz I'm at work, and will be nipping out of work to take her, then coming back. My bribe might be that I'll bring her back to work with me.
Its also nice to know so many are actually going to have the jab, big hugs to the los who are going to have it, and any mums like me, who'll probably be more upset than lo

My DS had his today and he's nearly 16mth, he had his in his thigh and didn't even cry! That's a 1st cos usually we have injection meltdown. Have to commend the doctors surgery here who had toys galore all over the doctors room to distract the little ones on this special clinic - sure worked!

His leg looks normal not even red or swollen, so fingers crossed he doesn't have a reaction to it - been fine all day.

Hopefully all that mummy worrying beforehand was uncessary!

I've got to book my girls in for their swine flu jabs soon so this has been really useful post for me. I just don't know whether to take them in together or make them seperate appointments a few days apart. Evie hates the nurse, she tenses up as soon as she gets in the room, whereas Lily isn't as bothered. But she's old enough to know what's going to happen. Eek! I'll defo be taking hubby as I hate anything to do with jabs and will prob end up nearly in tears myself.

We've got ours booked for the 16th - lo and I together as I'm pregnant. Fortunately it's a Saturday morning clinic so hubby can come with us, otherwise I'd have made us separate appointments. I'm hoping his'll be in his leg, that's where his jabs have been so far so it's more what we're used to. Think I'll get lo to have his first, as if he sits and watches mine there's no way he'll cooperate for his - he'll be better if he doesn't know it's coming, although he'll realise soon enough if he thinks I';m holding him still - he's 18 months. I'll have hubby on standby with a snack ready, which usually leads to instant recovery - then after a quick cuddle hand him over to Daddy so I can have mine. Not looking forward to it though!

With all dd1s jabs she stopped crying before I did, with dd2 I've been much stronger, for her sake not mine lol, they can't see my stomach in knots.
Lea i guess it depends what your clinic/gps is like. I have no idea when dd2 is having her jab, but I know the hv who will do them, and if the first got upset, she would be happy for me to comfort them, and jab the next when we were all ready, but some hvs etc aren't like that. I hope
everything is ok for you all x x x
