Trying to conceive

i took my last pill the Friday before last and had my withdrawal bleed last week so now I guess we are officially TTC! I just don't know what to expect now, I've had a few cramps on and off over the weekend but does anyone else have any stories about coming off the pill, I'm a bit apprehensive about how my body is going to change after being on it for 11 years!

Hi mrs L and welcome to md.
I came off the pill last August and it took me 3 months to conceive. My periods returned to "normal" almost immediately.
Are you taking folic acid?

Yes been taking a trying for a baby vitamin for about a month now. Did you notice any changes in your skin or weight or moods once you'd come off the pill? X

Hi and welcome MrsL
It also depends on what pill you are on and how strong it is - when I came off a standard one a couple years ago was about 4 months before I got AF. When i came off in May I was on the mini pill so AF back to normal straight away!

Hi Ceejay I was on logynon x

I was on the pill for 16 years. Came off and my first cycle was 39 days then they got shorter each time. Conceived on cycle 3 but sadly miscarried. Everyone is different coming off birth control. Some people bounce straight back immediately, others take a bit longer.
It might be worth getting a period tracking app or keeping a note of your dates in your diary.
Best of luck. There is a TTC thread that the ladies post on daily. Feel free to get involved xx

I didn't notice any changes in weight or skin. I guess it might depend on the pill type.

Hi MrsL. I came off the pill at the start of July, went straight into normal 27 day cycles, and got a bfp after my August cycle. That was after 19 years on the pill, with maybe a six month break in that time.

Hi MrsL. Just to give another angle... I came off the pill in October 2012 and my cycles have been really erratic ever since (ranging from 40 to 84 days) - my last cycle was 37 days and my shortest yet but still not 'normal' however I had erratic cycles prior to going on the pill x

Thanks all I guess we will see what happens! Hubby and I didn't want to wait for a full first cycle before trying so well see what the month brings! X

I came off the pill almost a year prior to TTC and in the time my cycles were long and irregular. That said, we were very lucky in that we conceived quickly and had no problems, so even if they take a while to settle down, it's not always bad news. I downloaded the iPhone Period Tracker app to keep track of my cycles and try to 'predict; when AF might arrive next.

Mrs L can you remember wade your cycles were like prior to the pill? That might give you some indication of what they'll return to?

No I can't remember at all, was ou 16 when I started the pill! I guess time will tell x

I came off the pill 8th july and got my BFP 9th August. Hope your ttc journey is a short one.

I came off the pill... And never got a period for over a year (and even then it was medically induced!)
I hope your body is better behaved than mine!

Thanks all x

I came off the pill in May, didn't have a period, started to worry about it around July...by which time I was already pregnant!
In terms of side effects I got quite a lot of spots (my friend is having the same problem) on my chest/back which was something I haven't suffered from since I was a teenager. But my moods became so much better and calmer. I kind of wish I came off it sooner as I'm a much nicer person!

I came off the pill in June ( I think) first period was really long, about 42 days, but I quickly got back to my 30/32 day cycle, was on it 7 years. Good luck!

Hi Ducky....sorry for dragging up an old thread.
I am in a similar situation. Came off the pill after 10 years in May 13, still no period. Been to the doctors today and I need to go for a blood test. I'd been quite happily thinking it still may take a while longer, but they have scared me now by saying it is unusual. What do they do to induce it?
16/01/2014 at 15:29
They'd give you provera (medication) which will induce a period. They'd probably want to look into a cause though i.e. PCOS. They might do an ultrasound scan of your ovaries to check for cysts. Then they'd probably try clomid to see if that makes you ovulate. Thats not meant to scare you, just to explain possible scenarios! x
