Trying to conceive

Hello :) new to the forum, been on the pill for 10 years now (cilest for the last 8) and wanting to come off the pill to try for first baby. I'm about 7 days into my packet and wondering whether it's better to finish the packet or just stop taking it now? Does it make any difference?

Hello and welcome! I was on the pill gor 13 years until the week before Christmas. I was on celest for last 8 years or so. I finished my pill packet so is have a regular withdrawal bleed and then go from there. I don't think it matters to much if you just stop, just be aware you could potentially conceive from the first day you miss. I guess that doesn't matter if that's what you are hoping, I came off earlier than planning to try to give my body time to regulate and get back to normal. Good luck.

Hi Magic82, thanks for the reply! My plan is the same, to come off pill and let my body get back to normal as ttc around Spring/summer time. I've seen loads online about it being best to finish pill packet so you have your withdrawal bleed at your normal time of the month, but then have read loads saying it doesn't matter either way. Did you find you got into a natural cycle quickly?

I was dreing not getting my period, but I had a 35 day cycle. Before the pill I had a 5 to 6 week cycle naturally, and my mum was the same, so although I've only had one real period it was pretty much on time. I've been tracking my ovulation using tests and pretty sure I did yesterday so I'm on track for another 35 ish day cycle this time. I'm amazed as after so long on the pill non stop I'd imagined it being more erratic at first. I use ovia app which I really find helps. I would say if you're not trying immediately finish your current packet and then don't go back after your 7 day break. I'm not sure if having a withdrawal bleed only a week or two after your last one would set your body off on the back foot so to speak.

hi Lauren - I'll let you know in next few days as I stopped taking my pill 13 pills in and the last pill I took was 2nd Feb , I had my breakthrough bleed on 6th Feb so counting this as Day 1 of my cycle which makes me Day 9 now (am using Ovia to track). If my body goes back to normal I should ovulate mid this week. I am going to follow SMEG plan which says to start TBD from Day 8 every other day and am using OPK's.

To be honest I first went on the pill when I was 16 and I always had regular periods before but can't remember how long my cycles were. I've just been on holiday so actually started a new packet straight after last one so haven't had my withdrawal for about 6 weeks. Would you still recommend finishing this packet even though it will then be around 8 weeks since last withdraw?

Great thanks Chelsea! I'm probably just being impatient but I'm just wondering whether because I've taken two packets back to back due to not wanting to be on period mid holiday and it being 5-6 weeks since my last withdrawal period whether I should just stop now...I'll have to look into how best to keep track of everything. Are these apps you're using to track ovulation and cycle days etc?
14/02/2016 at 16:47
I guess as you have gone back to back with packets it really won't matter. If you feel you want to stop then just do it, I know how impatient I was counting down the days until the end of my packet, it felt like i was edging closer to the next part of my journey towards being a mum!

I downloaded ovia and clue, I found ovia a much nicer app to use!

Hi Lauren, it depends on when you are going to start TTC - if in the next 3 months in my opinion you are better to come off now start using Ovia to track this cycle and you should ovulate approx 12 days after you get your breakthrough bleed. I would advise to start to use OPK's so you know when you are ovulating. They say to start OPK testing after day 8 of your cycle. The start of your cycle is day 1 of the breakthrough bleed. The breakthrough bleed is just a reaction to the stop in hormones from the pill but it says online that the bleed marks the start of a new cycle i.e your body getting ready of the 'waste' and preparing for pregnancy again. I guess if you have been on the pill since 16 it may still take you a couple of cycles to 'get back to normal' i.e to know when you normally ovulate etc. Also - you may decide to TTC sooner then you planned as you could get broody :) Anyway -I will let you know next week if I ovulate on time as this willbe my first cycle after coming off the pill mid pack.

I think I'm just going to go for it! Thanks for your help I'll def be getting those apps. So glad for this forum as I wouldn't have a clue otherwise haha!

No problem, you can download for free on Kindle/Internet Sperm Meets Egg and it gives you a method and tips on conceiving - worth a read when you decide to TTC, also you should start taking pre conception tabs. I'm taking seven seas ones they are recommended on these forums. There are pregnacare pre conception tabs for men also - I have my husband taking them also.

Thanks Chelsea! I've been taking folic acid tablets for a month and have been wondering if there's anything pre pregnancy I could also be taking so that's a big help thanks! We were thinking of ttc in a couple of months when my cycles are back to normal but yes I probably will get too broody and just get into the swing of things sooner haha! Yes please do let me know that'd be great thanks!

I'm also on seven seas 'trying for a baby' I started as soon as I came off the pill as some people have said they helped regulate their cycles. Also I hate swallowing tablets and they are tiny and very easy to swallow.
14/02/2016 at 17:15
Brilliant thanks I'll go get some this week then. Can you get them from boots or somewhere like that?
14/02/2016 at 17:27
Yes, ive seen them everywhere, supermarkets and chemist etc. usually on offer like 3 for 2 somewhere if you shop around. i think you can even get them on Amazon!
14/02/2016 at 19:43
yes they are the same ones I am on. they come highly recommended on these forums and discreet packaging.

Hi there I came off the pill last Feb and had normal 28 cycles immediately. I did finish the pack. I conceived in April and wasnt tracking anything other than an app on my phone. Only saw my husband on weekends due to work! Sadly lost the baby three months later and TTC again with wacky cycles now ugh but just stopping by to wish you well. My name is Lauren too :) oh and I was only taking prenatals that's it. And I was 38 years old at the time. No legs in the air, no o strips, just good old baby making no trying but no preventing I was fortunate. (Now I'm TTC again and it's harder but fingers crossed.) So hoping your cycles are good and regular right away. Best of luck!!

Hi Lauren, so sorry to hear about your troubles last time! Hope things go better this time around for you! Thanks for the reply :) im too impatient to wait for the end of my pack so I took my last pill on Sunday so going to use an app to track from the day I get first period and see how it goes :)

Magic82 I've just found the seven seas trying for a baby tablets on Amazon but they have folic acid in. I already take folic acid tablets, would it be too much? Is there anything else you would recommend?
