Looking for a bit of advice...
I plan to start TTC in 3 months, would it be a good idea to start taking folic acid now or leave it until we actually start?
I have mixed advice so far, so hoping u lovely MDers would help xx

The advice is to start 3 months before TTC so I would definitely start now. Good luck!

U should take 3 months before Ttc. Also you will need high dose folic acid that the gp can prescribe if your bmi is over 30, you have crohns, any history if fetal abnormalities in your family for example spina bifida and there's some evidence that you take a higher dose with recurrent mc too. Otherwise just the normal OTC folic acid is fine

Sorry to crash but CP do you have to ask the doctor about a high dose of folic acid or can you just take it yourself? Am starting trying again in September but already taking a conception supplement. Willing to try anything!
Sorry for crashing cooper and good luck! X

The 5mg folic acid needs to be prescribed.

Will try to find link for you, its on royal college of obstetrician/gynaecologist website, I took print out with me as there used to be an old hitcher who was obstetrician who advised me to use it but thankfully my gp knew all about it, the new evidence has been supported by RCOG since 2009/2010 and when I Ttc Isaac the hitcher advised me to take the print out to gp incase they weren't in the loop but thankfully my gp had recently done a gynae placement and was happy to prescribe

Thank you - that's really kind of you. Luckily our GP is really supportive of us so don't think I would have a battle! Just need to feel I am doing all I can if that makes sense.

But you could just take 12 of the 400ug tablets I guess!

Bit of a mouthful though.

Would cost a fortune too!! Ha!

You can get them free at Asda (apparently).
09/06/2013 at 22:06
Really? Thanks for that - will investigate!
09/06/2013 at 22:07
Have googled that and you have to be pregnant apparently. Bum!
09/06/2013 at 22:24
Oh. Well that's a bummer. Probably best to get it on prescription then.

Don't you only get 90 tablets in a pot though so you would be buying a pot a week* and having to take 12 tablets a day when you can just take one from the prescribed 5mg iyswim.
*maybe ud get a but more than a week but its late and my maths is crap

I guess it's cost of a prescription versus pot of usual folio acid cost wise!

Start taking Folic acid now.
GB - I take prescribed FA due to family history. Defo go see your doctor now and get some on board.
