I've bought loads of opks ready for this cycle but I'm not sure how it works. What time of day is best to do it? Do I pee on them or pee into a pot first and dip?

I prefer to pee in a pot first.
OPKs shouldn't be used with FMU so normally testing after 10am up to about 10pm (I think?!).
I prefer to test at 2pm but only ever get to do this if I'm off work so normally do mine when I get home between 5pm and 6pm. try to do them at roughly the same time each day.

What Gillsy said. I think the best time to do it is afternoon/early evening. Try and do it the same time each day (less likely to miss a surge that way). Some that you buy you can pee straight on, but the internet cheapy ones you have to pee in a pot and then dip.
If you have bought ICs then they can only be done in a pot. I do mine at about 5pm when I get home from work.

OPKs work by detecting the surge of luteinising hormone that happens just before the egg is released, and the surge usually happens later on it in the day - say between 11am and 8pm. It's best to try and stick to the same time each day, for consistency, but for those who have very short cycles it may also be feasible to do an OPK twice a day (especially if they really like peeing on things )
I suggest peeing into a pot and then dipping - it's important not to submerge the stick past the 'max' line, so the pee-pot-and-dip method works best! Hold them in for about 10 seconds, and lie them on a flat surface and don't touch until you read them!
Remember a true positive for an OPK is when the test line is equally as dark as the control line, or darker. You may find the test lines get progressively darker over a few days before a true positive, or it may go from no line at all to positive in a short space of time! You usually ovulate 12-36 hours after a positive OPK.
Hope that helps a bit?!

Oops cross posted with everyone else - that'll teach me to write an essay!

Echo what others have said. also once my lines start to get almost positive I tend to test more times throughout the day (and as I'm a poas-aholic!) and have found I get my darkest lines around 9pm. I also temp and have found I normally ovulate 2 days after my first positive opk. x
Thanks girls. I wasnt sure if doing it when I got home from work would be too late but sounds like its the right time :)

PS you've read my mind! AF has just arrived so to cheer myself up (it hasn't worked yet but I'm hoping!) I have ordered a job lot of these to try and get a better idea of what is happening this time! Lots of useful info - thanks all!
I used to do mine between 3-5pm. I'd do one a day after I came off my period. When I started getting close to when I thought I would ovulate (day10 onwards usually) I would do it twice a day, with the second one at about 8pm to try and prevent me missing my surge. It seemed to work ok. I prefer temping now though, but do combine both a bit.

After the advice given I just dipped my first ever opk!
Bit of another daft one but how long do you dip for? Doesn't say on my IC packaging :/

My packs said at least 10 seconds
