Trying to conceive

I am new to MD, and have questions already. I have heard if you have been on the pill a long time your vitamin b's are lowered, is this true? The department of health recommend folic acid preconception, yesterday I saw you can buy folic acid and vit b together and many different vitamins on sale for preconception and im not sure which would be the best one! I think I have a reasonable diet, I eat my 5+ a day! So am thinking just taking folic acid on its own. Any advice would be much appropriated! Thanks x

I suspect that you are more than likely having enough B6 if you are eating all of you 5 a day every day,I am not too hot on B6 though :)! Hopefully someone else will be along with more knowledge!
But yes please do start taking Folic acid now, It's very important before trying to conceive and while pregnant!

The Boots own conception support are reasonably priced and will have everything you need. They always used to be on 3 for 2 as well.
You are advised to avoid normal multivitamins because they contain high levels of vitamin A which can be harmful to a developing foetus.

As Ducky said, Boots Conception Support are great, £3.99 for a box of 30 (one a day) and always on 3 for 2...so it's £2.66 a month...bargain!!

Can i just ask, how do you know you need this extra vitamins? Surely you should be getting enough with a balanced diet? I am obviously taking F.A but should i be taking anything else?

I guess none of us know for sure, but equally a bit extra doesn't hurt either.
Like you say Folic Acid is the only super-duper-must-be-taken one, the rest are just for good measure in case your diet is lacking in some areas or you're a poor absorber.

Vikster - WDS. I don't take any multivitamins normally, and confess that I sometimes neglect a healthy balanced diet in favour of junk, so I figure it can't do any harm. For £2.66 a month it's not that much more expensive than folic acid.
D17 - hope you have an easy journey

Hi Ducky17. I am just going to continue to take pregnacare whilst ttc, I'm assuming they contain everything I need and I've got 3 boxes worth of them. Does anyone know if I'm ok to take pregnancy ones?

Yes they are fine IMP.
I posted a side by side comparison of the TtC ones and Pregnancy ones on FB, not much difference in the essentials at all. Just a bit more iron and vitamin K for during pregnancy.
