Trying to conceive

I haven't been on here since my DD was born in August 2010 and I thought I would have mastered the whole TTC thing by now
We decided to start TTC last month and this month I used ovulation kits to see when I was ovulating. CD 1 was 8th July, but I get spotting for a week before. My cycles are normally 28 days and I started using the ovulation tests on CD11. Well, I didn't get a positive until CD18 (and not entirely sure it was positive!) so probably ovulated around CD19/20, which is quite late especially as I normally start spotting around CD21/22. Well, I'm now on CD25 and no sign of spotting. So I'm wondering whether I could be pg, but then if I did ovulate on CD19, it would be too early? Or maybe I ovulated earlier on, before I started taking the tests?
So... when would you take a pg test? Do you think I could get a positive from a first response now if I were pg? I won't get to go to the shop until tomorrow...

I hope this makes sense as the title doesn't quite match what I was getting to...

Thanks. It just doesn't seem to make sense because in a 28 day cycle, I should ovulate around CD14? But it didn't happen until CD19/20... I used the Boots ones, then the cheap ones from Tesco...

That's what I'm thinking. But I've read this means there isn't enough time for the egg to implant? With my DD, we made the decision to TTC half way through my cycle, so I thought it would be too late to conceive, but we did... Only now I'm trying to work it out, and I'm stressing out!
