Of course children would recognise McDonalds or a Zoo, both are far more exciting and fun than most British Landmarks... for anyone, let alone a child aged 5-12!
Why would a child need to leave their hometown between 5-12 years old? Every thing they could possibly need will be at hand. It is very stressful taking children on longer journeys unless of course you are the sort of parent who has little regard for your children's happiness.
Can you please explain: “There’s no doubt that cultural activity enriches day to day and it’s important that children embrace our history and culture”? How can you possibly define British Culture? Why and how are the 5-12 years supposed to (or would want to) 'embrace' their history and culture when they don't even understand the terms.
Our 'culture' forces women to go out to work so we don't have the time for cultural trips.
Again, what 5-12 year old child would prefer to peruse an art book/gallery then a computer game or cinema? None! Certainly they should be exposed to the cultural side of life but it will become interesting and relevant at a much later age. Your 'Deals of the week' are shameful when attache to such an article and I believe you used your arguments (for the want of a better word) soley to lead on to those adverts. Shame on you Emma Gray for using parents insecurities to do so!
