I don't like it. If people are willing to pay £300 to find out at 7 weeks, then they must be pretty desperate to know, which makes you wonder why. I think it should only be available on private prescription ie one which you have to pay for but can only be given by a doctor, and you should have to sign something to say that you will not abort a healthy baby. I also think if it does become available they should monitor whether the abortion rate and also the apparent miscarriage rate increases amongst women who have used the test. As for 'experts' claiming that there is no evidence that women in the UK have used abortion for sex selection, this is primarily because gender identification is currently only available after 12 weeks after which point it becomes much more difficult to terminate a pregnancy. Most people I know have a preference particularly if the baby is not their first. However those who don't get their preferred sex learn to live with it, and love that child just as much as if it were the opposite. Personally I think this is another step on the road to 'designer babies'. If you're not happy with either gender, then don't have a baby. Full stop.
