Ruthern Valley, Cornwall

Close to Bodmin Moor, this secluded little camp is an idyllic escape for all the family. There are woods for making dens, beaches for building sandcastles, pigs and chickens to feed, and bikes that you can hire to ride along a nearby track. Ruthern Valley, Tel: 01208 831395

If you're about to try camping with your family for the first time and not sure it's going to become a regular thing, you may prefer to hire decent equipment rather than buy cheap - making sense for your pocket and the environment.  Look at www.contentedcamping.co.uk  - they're aiming at first-timer families and have a good range of equipment to 'try before you buy'.

We have stayed at some great campsites in France and most of them are listed on the following review site : www.bestfrenchcampsites.com

The ones we liked best were St Cast le Chatelet for its great beach although the cliff path can be avoided with small children - its possible to go via the road to the beach and I think there may be a short cut another way as well avoiding the cliff path.

We also like La Baie at Trinite Sur Mer as there is lots to see around Carnac.  And finally Les Deux Fontaines was a lovely quiet campsite with lots of space for kids to run around, two good playparks - one is hidden in a field ! and a nice swimming pool.

We didnt camp abroad until the youngest was about 4 as it can be tricky even in a mobile home keepiing an eye on them. Best tip is to arrange the sunloungers etc to create a garden area to fence them in !  We have also camped in tents with children. Best tip there is to take some old doormats to arrange at the door to trap the mud as its being walked towards the tent !

Happy Camping !
