Adam Kerr named UK’s Family Hero for raising £10,000 for charity and bravely donating bone marrow to his ill sister
A 12-year old boy has been named UK’s Family Hero of the Year at the 4Children and Take a Break magazine awards, for the help and support he’s given to his mum and two siblings, who were both born with serious illnesses.
Adam Kerr was just 6 when he donated bone marrow to his sister, Helen, who suffered from a rare blood disorder. Sadly, Helen died from complications a few months after the operation, but in her memory Adam began fundraising to help other sick children and their families.
Adam’s brother Brian, 9, suffers from a condition called Fanconi’s anaemia, which requires two blood transfusions a week and often leads to leuakemia.
“Helping other people helps me cope with Helen’s death. I help them but they help me too,” said Adam, as he won the award. “Mum was sad that Helen’s not here to see me but I told her she is in our hearts.”
Adam was given his award and a cheque for £2,000 at a ceremony in London, hosted by TV’s Arlene Phillip and DJ Neil Fox.
“Adam is an incredible young man. In his relatively short life he has faced real sadness and adversity and yet he works tirelessly to make life better for others,” Arlene said.
