Gigantic Damien Hirst pregnant statue plans for North Devon

Picturesque harbor could be home to cooky artist’s ‘Belly of the south’

Damien Hirst
To boldly go...

The Angel of the North could soon be upstaged if plans for a 20.25m statue of a pregnant woman in North Devon go ahead.

Artist Damien Hirst is said to be behind the design of the formidable figure, planned for the Victorian pier in North Devon’s Ilfracombe harbour.

As well as sporting a sizeable bump, the pregnant woman - or Verity as she’s set to be known - could brandish a whopping sword, complete with lightning rod. Artist’s impressions show that the statue would be visible from various spots around the town.

North Devon council proposals suggest the statue could have “significant impact on the tourist industry upon which most of the town relies”. It’s believed the plinth will be made up of legal books, creating a “monumental modern allegory of Truth and Justice”.

The planned ‘focal point’ screams Damien Hirst, who often takes inspiration from the circle of life. Lets just hope he doesn’t add any of his signature cigarette butts or dying flies!

Do you think the statue is a welcome celebration of pregnancy? Let us know below…
