New doll who 'plucks and shaves' her legs causes outrage
The latest Mattel dolls for tweens send out wrong messages to young girls, say parents
A new range of dolls from the makers of Barbie has caused outrage with parents after one of the characters boasts that she spends all her time removing bodily hair so she looks 'scarily fabulous'.
The new Monster High dolls, which feature four scantily dressed characters who wear heavy make-up and teeny skirts, all have online profile which describe their individual 'characteristics'.
The Clawdeen Wolf doll's profile says, "My hair is worthy of a shampoo commercial and that's just what grows on my legs. Plucking and shaving is definitely a full-time job but that's a small price to pay for being scarily fabulous."
The dolls, which are aimed at tweens aged between 10 to 12 years old, also claim that their favourite activities include 'flirting with boys'. Parents in the US have spoken out saying that these dolls are bad role models and sexualise young girls too early with talk of shaving their legs and wearing provocative clothing.
However, Mattel believes that the dolls "celebrate imperfections and accepting the imperfections of others".
