A tiny baby born 14 weeks early survives after being insulated with a plastic kitchen bag
A baby born prematurely at 26 weeks, weighing just 14oz, has survived thanks to being kept warm with a sandwich bag. The only thing doctors could find that was small enough to insulate Lexi Lacey’s tiny body was a 15cm plastic bag from the kitchens of the Worcester Royal Hospital.
“The doctors told us they had never known a baby born as prematurely as Lexi survive,” said mum Chelsea Rowberry. “She was so tiny the only thing they had to keep her body temperature warm was a sandwich bag from the hospital canteen – it’s incredible to think that saved her life,” she said.
Worcester Royal hospital can only care for babies born from 28 weeks with the facilities it has but as there wasn’t time to transfer baby Lexi, a sandwich bag had to suffice. Now 11 weeks old, Lexi weighs 5lbs 6oz and was allowed to go home on September 3.
