Kate Winslet

Actress Kate Winslet had an emergency caesarean with her daughter Mia in 2000. Kate said she wasn't happy with having a c-section because it made her feel like a "complete failure".

"My whole life, I've been told I had great child bearing hips. There's this thing amongst women that if you can handle childbirth, you can handle anything. I felt in some way, I couldn't join in the 'powerful women's club'," Kate admitted at the time.

Kate went on to have a vaginal birth with her second child, Joe, and said at the time, "It was really triumphant!" This is often referred to as a VBAC - vaginal birth after caesarean.

Christina Aguilera

Singer and mum-of-one Christina Aguilera had an elective caesarean at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in LA, right at the same time as Nicole Richie. However, both their births were completely different...

Christina decided to have a c-section as she admitted that she couldn't deal with the labour pain. "I didn't want any surprises. Honestly, I didn't want any vaginal tearing. I had heard horror stories," Christina said at the time.

Billie Piper

Actress Billie Piper needed an emergency caesarean with her son Winston after a 26-hour labour. Billie had to stay in hospital for five days following the birth.

"The emergency caesarean only took about 20 minutes," Billie's husband, Laurence Fox, said at the time. "Billie is happy. Of course she is, she's a mum. I am tired but not as tired as her - I am a proud father."

Camila Alves (aka Matthew McConaughey's partner)

Matthew McConaughey's partner Camila Alves supposedly endured a 60-hour labour before needing a caesarean to deliver her son Levi. Matthew was very proactive during the labour and later recalled what happened - in detail!

"Contractions started kicking in. We had a 14-hour session, her and I did. I sat there with her, right between her legs. We got tribal on it, we danced to it! I was DJ-ing this Brazilian music. We were jamming! She was sweating," Matthew revealed at the time.

"We’d been up for 40-something hours, and we went from dead tired to a really steadfast, ‘Let’s handle this… let’s stay in the rhythm. Don’t let the contraction be more than you.’ The doctor wanted to give her an epidural, and we said, 'Give us a few more hours to keep rocking with this.’ I wasn’t speaking for Camila. She had the option of saying, ‘Give me an epidural, right now,’ whenever she wanted. This is where I learnt - and no one tells you this - but having a baby is a bloody, pukey, sweaty, primeval thing! And I mean that as a beautiful thing. It is wild. But the vacuum didn’t work, and the doctor said, ‘C-section.’”
