Description:The British Museum was established in 1753 after Sir Hans Sloane bequeathed his huge collection of curiousities to George II in his will. It opened to the public in 1759 and is now home to more than seven million objects including the Rosetta Stone, and the controversial Elgin Marbles. There are 10 specialist departments in the museum focusing on areas including coins and medals, Ancient Egypt, Roman antiquities, and prints and drawings. One of the most distingushing characteristics of the British Museum is its Great Court with a unique tessellated glass roof, making it the largest covered square in Europe.
