Description:Edinburgh Castle perched on an extinct volcano, is an instantly recognisable national symbol. It carries a weighty history with Archaeologists discovering evidence for human occupation of the Castle Rock dating back to 900 BC, the late Bronze Age. The castle is part of Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site. It has seen many important events, such as being the place in 1566 where Mary Queen of Scots gives birth to her only child, the future King James VI of Scotland and I of England. Oliver Cromwell captured the castle during his invasion in 1650. Today the castle has more than 1.25 million visitors a year.
