Cool, classic and a tad quirky, Muji’s quality offerings have set the bar high
Muji’s Christmas press show has just provided me with a “first” I never expected to experience… it was the first press event I’ve ever been to where I found myself adoring every single product. I didn’t think it was possible, but Muji has (happily) proved me wrong.Muji held its press show just off London’s oh-so-trendy Carnaby Street. Walking in, everything was spaciously set out - each little toy and gadget was surrounded by white space, so you could look and play without any distraction… well, the table of multi-coloured macaroons and pain au chocolat did catch my eye, but only for a moment, I promise!I was instantly drawn to the bright felt sushi set (£11.95), and from here on in, my notebook, pen and camera had a real workout. I asked more questions than Paxman. For Christmas 2011, Muji is continuing with what it does so brilliantly – well-priced toys and gifts made from wood, textured fabrics and felts, with a clean, classic feel. They’re simple and elegant, but rather clever too – the flat-pack cardboard speakers (£19.95) would get any teenager or dad excited, and the soft toy that starts as an egg then folds inside out to become chicken (£8.95) would be spot on for your baby. With soft and wooden toys, wooden games and puzzles, puppets, techy gadgets and chic lifestyle and fashion products, it could easy be a one-stop shop for everyone on your Christmas list. Mums, the pouches made from reclaimed Kimono fabric are so beautiful, and with a price tag under £10, they look even better. While some wooden toys feel really retro, Muji’s offerings feel contemporary, urban and quirky - the Sumo wrestler skittles set, suitable for 3 years and up (£12.95) and the wooden children’s puzzle that looks like a mobile phone (£9.95) are just two examples. I could tell you more, but I won’t… there's a few secret gems you’re going to have to wait til Christmas to see!
