A substance in breast milk could help kill cancer cells, according to researchers in Sweden.
The research claims breast milk provides a natural immunity boost for children, reports the Telegraph. The same compound that’s made when Alpha-lactalbumin is combined with an acid from babies’ stomach could prove to be a cancer treatment in the future.
The compound, Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made Lethal to Tumour cells, or HAMLET for short, has been shown to kill cancerous cells, but importantly leaves the healthy ones alive.
Still in trial stages, the mixture is thought to be able to kill 40 different types of cancer cells.
Although experts reckon it will still be years before it’s known if the breast milk mixture is an effective treatment, researchers are continuing to study it, looking at its effect on skin cancer and tumours.
