Car seat fitting - retailers promise better service

Four major car seat retailers have signed up to Which? magazine’s charter in order to provide accurate advice when buying car seats

It's extremely important for parents to receive accurate advice when buying a car seat

Buying a car seat just got better following the news that Babies R Us, John Lewis, Mamas & Papas and Mothercare have all promised to give customers the best fitting service possible.

All four have signed up to a Car Seat Fitting Charter set up by the consumer organisation Which? This should ensure that every member of the retail staff understands the importance of fitting car seats correctly and the crucial information they need to tell parents.

This improvement comes after child car seat retailers came under fire after Which? investigated 43 high street and independent stores and found that half failed to give accurate advice or install car seats correctly. This included six major car seat retailers - Babies R Us, John Lewis, Mamas & Papas, Mothercare, Halfords and Tesco - which were found to be offering less than satisfactory advice to parents about car seats.

The first four retailers have now signed up to the charter, Halfords is currently looking into the situation and Tesco explained that it doesn't offer a car seat fitting service. This is something to remember when you are buying a car seat as it's essential that you get professional fitting advice with your car seat.

Each retailer was provided with detailed feedback following these results back in October and a 10-point best-practice charter was created by Which?, covering the 10 most important areas that are essential for every trained assistant to know before selling a car seat to a customer.

After the positive response to its investigation, Which? will be working closely with retailers to help improve the car seat recommendations made to parents. If you're unsure what to look out for when it comes to choosing the best car seat for you and your child, make sure you check out our buyer's guides to car seats.

It is a good idea, but if you contact your local council road safety officers they should be very well informed and able to give unbiased advice.
I have also found rearfacing.co.uk a good source when I brought my baby's car seat.
