Parents choose to holiday in the UK rather than abroad this summer
Families opt for a 'Staycation' rather than heading abroad for their summer holiday

Getting away from it by jetting off to somewhere hot and exotic is gradually becoming a thing of the past, according to research by OnePoll. Due to the bite of the recession, only 48% of parents admit they’re able to afford to go abroad. Instead, families are going back to traditional British holidays closer to home and choosing Blackpool over the Bahamas.

The ‘Staycation’ trend is a great way for parents to get nostalgic with their own children by reminiscing over times they holidayed as youngsters. Old family favourites still prove popular amongst budget conscious mums and dads with family picnics, walks in the woods and visiting museums all featuring in the top 5 things to do in the summer.

Despite the unpredictable weather in the UK, beach holidays scored as the favourite type of holiday for families, with holiday camps such as Center Parcs (23%), activity holidays (16%) and city holidays (11%) closely following.

A third say that nothing can beat the fun of building sandcastles on the beach, but this year the beach in question isn’t the picturesque white sand version in the Carribean, but in Bournemouth, which proved the favourite beach hotspot for UK families.

Only a quarter (28%) are planning a trip overseas – down from 44% last year. But all is not lost – as 42% of parents revealed that traveling to and from the destination is the biggest holiday nightmare!

Whether you clock up the air miles or jump in the car somewhere within the UK, the essential key to summer family fun is spending quality time together. The survey found that 62% of parents believe that playing games and having fun, whatever the weather or location is the main recipe for a great holiday.
