Court case for mum who took daughter out of school for wedding of a terminally ill friend
A mum from Wiltshire has been slapped with a fine and taken to court after she took her 7-year-old out of school to attend a terminally ill friend’s wedding.
The mum says that she gave the Wroughton primary school two weeks written notice of the leave. She claims she heard back only the day before the planned leave with a note saying that her daughter would only be granted one day’s leave, instead of the requested 5 days.
The reason behind the refusal was because the extra days wouldn’t be spent abroad on holiday, but at home with family.
The girl’s parents were sent letters saying they’d been given a £50 fine. But when the fine was ignored, the local authority decided to prosecute them. They were left with a £235 bill after pleading guilty to failing to secure regular attendance of the school.
“We would normally not have taken them out of school in term time for anything. It had to be something exceptional,” the girl’s mum told her local newspaper, This is Wiltshire.
