New statistics on working mums

Figures say 64% of all 3 and 4 year olds go to nursery.

According to the latest figures, almost two out of every three children, aged 3 to 4 years, head off to nursery each week.

Two-thirds of all 3 and 4 year olds take part in early years education as mums head off to work, figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show.

Over the past three decades, the number of pre-school children spending at least part of the week in nurseries has grown three-fold. In 1971, just 21% of children were in nursery.

This increase is because more and more mums with children under 5 are working instead of staying at home, reports the Daily Mail.

However, ONS officials said the rise is partially down to the increase in the number of nursery schools themselves. “The increase in the proportion of children enrolled in early years education over the last three decades partly reflects the increase in the number of places available,” commented a spokesman. Today, there are 3,273 state-run nursery schools – that’s nearly five times the 723 in 1971.

Does your child love heading off to nursery? Or would you stay at home if you had the choice? Let us know below…
