Early study show promising results for a new vaccine
A swine flu vaccine has been trialled, with results showing it may work after just one dose.Of the volunteers who took part in the trial, 80 out of 100 showed a ‘strong, potentially protective’ response with one dose. This rose to 90 out of 100 when a second dose of the vaccine was given. Dr Ian Stephenson, from Leicester University and the leader of the trial, said, “These initial results should help to plan vaccination campaigns in the autumn, including doses and timings.” Chief medical officer Dr Liam Donaldson has commented that at this stage the results should be treated with caution. Larger trials involving more than 6,000 adults and children have now begun around the world.
