You could be allowed to stay with your family doctor, even after moving home.
NHS patients in England may be given more choice over how they use their GP services and could even be able to choose to register with a doctor near their workplace or their children’s school.
This would also mean that patients would no longer be forced to register with new doctors after moving homes, thanks to a new deal between GPs and Government.
“Patients often tell me that they want more choice over which practice they can register with, so I am please that this deal allows three major pilots to be launched across England that will allow patients to register at practices away from where they live, such as where they work,” said Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.
“This will save up to three million people who move locally every year the hassle of re-registering as they can remain with the practice of their choice,” added Andrew.
However GPs fear that the changes could result in patients failing to seek medical attention as they live too far away, according to The British Medical Association.
Trials for the changes will commence next April.
