Roald Dahl claims the title of teachers' favourite children's author

Roald Dahl has been voted primary school teachers’ favourite author, while Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo snaps up the title of best children’s book.

A survey from the education resources website Teachit Primary found that five of Roald’s works make teachers’ top 10 books for children under 11.

The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson, took a landslide victory and claimed the prize for best book for children in the survey of 848 primary school teachers.

“The Gruffalo was teacher’s overwhelming favourite book at the moment, polling more than twice as many votes as Louis Sachar’s Holes,” Teachit founder, Siobhain Archer, said. “But five of Roald Dahl’s books appeared in the top 10 and when counted together with all those who could not name a favourite title but who said any of Dahl’s books were a hit with their classes, a staggering 17% of primary teachers named him as their favourite children’s author.”

The poll also found 57% of teachers spend between five and 10 hours a week planning lessons, and 62% would not change career as teaching was their dream job!
