The Budget – what bits should parents know?

Tax, public spending, deficit, debt, inflation – if all these words are just making your head spin, here are the key points families need to know about the Budget...

Yesterday the Chancellor Alistair Darling announced the Budget. And as a busy parent or preoccupied parent-to-be, you’ll either have missed the whole thing or be left wanting to know exactly which bits will affect families. Here are the basic points...

CHILD TAX CREDIT

Parents with children aged 1 and 2 will receive an extra £4 a week in child tax credit from 2012.

The Evening Standard reported that Alistair Darling noted that that 440,000 families had gotten extra help via the tax credit system – or in real terms, an extra £38 each week.

HOME SWEET HOME

For first-time buyers, the stamp duty starting rate will go up to £250,000, for two years. For those £1 million properties (and over), the stamp duty will be 5%.
