The Budget at-a-glance – what families need to know

Yesterday, the emergency Budget was revealed. Here’s what us parents and parent-to-be can expect.

Your family finances
Will the emergency Budget see your piggy bank looking leaner and feeling lighter?

Yesterday, chancellor George Osborne’s emergency Budget was announced. But what does it all mean for you, your family or your bump? Here are the key points…

Pregnancy

  • The £190 pregnancy grant will be stopped from April 2011
  • The Sure Start maternity grant will be limited to your first child only (currently this grant is for those on a low income, and is a one-off payment of £500 for each baby you have)

Families

  • Child benefits will be frozen for three years
  • The joint income threshold for child tax credits will be lower to £40,000
  • Low-income families – you’ll get greater child tax credits. The amount for each child will go up by £150 next year (this is a rise that’s above inflation)
  • Single parents – you’ll be expected to look for work as soon as your youngest child starts school (right now, this is expected only once your youngest child is 10)
  • VAT will rise from 17.5% to 20% from 4th January 2011. It’s been estimated by some that this will cost the “average” family an extra £425 a year.
  • Personal income tax allowance will go up by £1,000 to £7,475 in April 2011

I really don't understand why single parents are told to go back to work so fast; childcare's not exactly cheap, is it?

I am fortunate not to be in this position but I feel so sorry for people who are

We looked at childcare for our 2 & if I worked a 40 hour week I'd earn a whopping £50. crazy isn't it. Luckily we're able to have me stay at home with the girls for 6 years which is great but I really feel for people that can't. I'd love to see more companies that have a creche for employees children. I bet the number of sick days because the childs of sick would be reduced too. Locally for 2 children it is 18k per year for childcare. The average job in this area is about 14k. No doubt with new budgets they will start to pay less towards childcare soon. About 2 years ago

This government is a joke, what about single parents who want to stay at home and raise their children themselves???
I have no idea at the cost of childcare but I imagine the job I did before having the boys would no where near cover it,and leave me with nothing.
They have such fine ideas about what we all should do,their wives do not work for the petrol money to get them there!
The sure start grant was a lifesaver for me,that's stopping, and the £190,I've actually never claimed this, but good job, that's getting scrapped too. Ok the more children you have you do have the bigger more essential items but nappies, wipes, even vests and babygrows(especially if your seciond is different sex!) all adds up,most mums I know would be extremely grateful for a bonus.

The government waste so much money on so many other things when I worked for a local council they must have restructured at least twice and sicne I have left twice more, this in itself costs a fortune and what for! a total waste.

CHildcare in my area costs between £50 - 65 per day!  So for me working I am left with not too much, my sister is now having Harry once in the week and he will go to the childminders the other two days, from January the childminder can claim back money for me for me free childcare (nursery place) from the age of 3 so I will be better off, however if I had a 2nd before harry was three I couldnt have afforded to work - which is mad (although wouldnt have minded that my OH couldnt question me working or not then!!)

When I worked at the COuncil I saw a lot of people try to go back to work and come of benefits but actually they got into debt before they started - and ended back on benefit they couldnt afford to work - something wrong there I think!

grr I know there is no easy answer & I am sure I coudlnt make any better decisions, I know the country needs to get out of debt but I am sure there are other options.
