Toddlers of TV-addicts talk less

Research reveals how the amount of TV you watch affects your child’s language skills.

How much TV you watch as a parent could impact on the amount of words your toddler speaks.

Children of TV-addicted parents are slower to learn to talk and slower to develop important language skills, new research has shown, reports The Scotsman.

The research, published yesterday in the Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, revealed that in homes where the TV is on regularly, there’s little conversation or interaction between parents and their young children. For every hour mum or dad spends watching TV, children speak fewer words, and babies are less likely to talk back.

The study looked at 329 children, aged 2 months to 4 years. For up to two years, the children wore digital devices on random days to record everything they heard or said. The recordings were analysed by computer software.

The recordings revealed that each additional hour of TV exposure was linked to a decrease of 770 words that a child heard from an adult.
