Twenty-five parents jailed for children’s truancy

Thousands of parents prosecuted for failing to send their children to school

Parents are being prosecuted for their part in children's truancy

Nearly 12,000 parents were prosecuted last year for failing to send their children to school. Just over 9,000 were found guilty under UK truancy laws and while two-thirds of those received a fine, 25 were given a jail sentence.

The number of parents being caught out by truancy laws is steadily rising. In 2005, the number of prosecutions was far lower, around 4,000.

Earlier this year, education secretary Michael Gove claimed there is “an ironclad link between illiteracy, disruption, truancy, exclusion and crime.” He is calling for tougher sanctions on parents.

“When fines are imposed for truancy they are often reduced to take account of an adult’s expenditure on satellite TV, alcohol and cigarettes. And many appear to shrug off fines and avoid existing sanctions, refusing to take responsibility for their actions. So we need to review the sanctions schools, police, the courts and the government, have available,” Michael said.

But critics are concerned that prosecuting parents is not the best way to encourage children and families back into the school system.

“Schools would always wish to avoid taking this route. It is clearly better by far to work with parents rather than prosecute them,” said Christine Blower, from the National Union of Teachers (NUT). “Working alongside the relevant support services and local authorities to ensure that parents are supported and pupils get the education they need is essential another reason to be alarmed at the cuts of local authority budgets which threaten such provision.”

The government found that more than 450,000 children regularly missed school between autumn 2010 and spring 2011 – that’s 7% of the school population.

Taking a child out of school for a holiday is very different to parents who do not take kids to school because they can not be bothered or have no control over their child....... It is the children who continually have time off throughout the year who's educations suffer and are more likely to fit the government model. These are e children's nod families who need help and support to stop the kids becoming a statistic not the kids who's parents take em out of school for a week for a holiday ...... No doubt fining these parents is to do with revenue generation rather than child welfare. About 1 years ago

I know it sounds harsh, but perhaps being this tough will actually make people think twice - if it's just a fine, and then it turns out you can milk it and get out of paying a fine, where's the deterent? Obviously they aren't just going around jailing everyone who has a child skip a day - it must be pretty bad for them to go from giving you a fine to giving you a jail term About 1 years ago

I think if it's a regular thing then some parents might deserve a fine or to go to prison, but I'm not sure that would actually help the kids involved, and surely that's the point? I guess I agree with the teachers, that it's better to work with the family - both the parents and the child - because it can't be good for children to see their parents go to jail.

But on the other hand, I wonder if seeing their parents getting into trouble because they're not going to school would make children feel guilty enough to start going...

Why don't holiday companies give families a break? The cost of going abroad is what normally seems to prompt parents to pull their kids out of school - maybe the Government could step in and do something there instead of prosecuting parents?? About 1 years ago
