School uniform could put you back over £166!

Preparing your child for their first day of school in September totals over £166 on average for each child, a recent survey reveals.

The study compiled a shopping list of items that parents can expect to purchase for their child's first day of school. The survey asked parents, with kids aged 4 to 6 year, how much they spent when preparing their children for their first day, as well as what items they actually purchased.

Here's what parents have been paying, according to MyVoucherCodes.co.uk:

  • School uniform - £70
  • PE kit – £20
  • Shoes - £15
  • School bag – £12
  • Pencil case and pencil case contents - £17
  • Reading material - £11.85
  • Hair cut - £12
  • Lunch box - £9

Grand total: £166.85. Ouch.

How many people did they survey - 1 or 2 parents with more money than sense? Who on earth spends £17 on a pencilcase and pens for a 4 year old who can't even write? Especially when it's more than they allegedly spent on a pair of comfortable shoes to be worn every day. Or £12 on a child's haircut (kids' haircuts are £3 at my hairdresser). This is just an example of 'silly stats' : some of these items (bookbag, lunchbox) are one-offs that last for several years, and most of the clothing should last the year. The prices seem like the top end of what you would expect to pay except for the shoes which seem very cheap at £15. About 1 years ago

Who spends £12 on a kid's haircut!? Madness! I must admit though, I am going overboard on the school clothes but don't think I've hit the £70 mark... yet! About 1 years ago
