Baking soda is one of those brilliant things you can use for just about everything around the house - from cleaning your oven and loo to getting rid of grease stains and even treating insect bites.

It's fair to say we'd be pretty surprised if you didn't have a tub of the stuff stashed in one of your cupboards.

But did you know that as well as doing all of the above and more, there's an old wives' tale that says baking soda can be used to predict the sex of your baby. Really? Yup. ?

What's the test?

The test itself is simple. Just put a couple of tablespoons of baking soda into a glass. Collect some of your urine next time you pee and pour it onto the baking soda. If it fizzes - you're having a boy. If there's no noticeable reaction - it's a girl.

How does it work?

The theory is that the gender of your unborn baby can affect the acid content of your urine - and if you've ever mixed vinegar and baking soda together you'll know that fizz you get when mixing the baking soda with something acidic.

What our mums say

Mums on our Facebook page and forum have shared their experiences of the baking soda test. So did it work?

Two said they'd both had fizzing - suggesting they'd have boys... and they did. ?

Although another mum got no fizzing when she tried it with her second pregnancy - so judging by the test she thought she might be having a girl... but it was a boy.

One of our mums, Supersquish, made a video showing the test: you can watch it just below.

As you'll see there's no fizzing - which suggests a girl. And Supersquish had... a boy!

As with most of these tests, the chances they'll give you the right prediction are - need we say it - 50/50.

What do you think?

Have you tried the baking soda test to see if you're having a boy or girl? Was it right? Tell us in the comments below or over on Facebook
