Elton John's clever 3-jar pocket money rule
Here's a great way to teach your children about the value of money – from a super-rich celebrity dad, no less...
Seeing Sir Elton John on stage at Glastonbury this year reminded us of the brilliant 3-jar pocket-money rule he had for his sons Zachary and Elijah (pictured above with Elton and his husband David Furnish), when they were little.
"They get £3 pocket money," Sir Elton told the Guardian back in 2016. "It's £1 is for charity, £1 is for saving and £1 is for spending. They get 3 coins and put them in separate jars.
"And they have to work for it: help in the kitchen, help in the garden. They've got to learn the value of doing something and earning something for themselves."
We like how clear and to the point this system is. It teaches the value of saving and spending and the importance of thinking about others by giving to charity.
And, for a celebrity's children, it's firmly grounded in the realities of 'normal life': something that Sir Elton says he and his husband David tried to provide as much as possible for their sons.

"They live a very local life in Old Windsor," he said at the time. "They go round their mates’ houses. It’s not a showbiz life as such. They’re not stuck behind the gates of a mansion. Saturdays when I’m home, we go to Pizza Hut with them, we go to the cinema. I’ve never been a recluse, I’ve never hidden away. I’m on the school run."
