Fifty Shades of Grey helps pregnant Tamzin Outhwaite
The former Eastenders star reads the raunchy novel when her bump and baby keep her awake
It's a publishing phenomenon with saucy storylines that are predicted to cause a baby boom in nine month's time. Now Tamzin Outhwaite has hopped on board the Fifty Shades of Grey bandwagon, too.
Speaking to The Mirror, the heavily pregnant actress revealed that her baby’s night time stirrings have been keeping her awake, saying, “Sometimes she can be very active, so I don’t always get the best night’s sleep.” But instead of tossing and turning, she has found a novel way to pass the night hours, admitting cheekily “I’ve just bought Fifty Shades of Grey so I can read that if I’m awake”.
Although she is due to give birth next month, putting an end to the internal gymnastics, Tamzin may wish to invest in the rest of the titillating trilogy too, as a new survey has reported that new mothers lose on average one month’s sleep in their baby’s first year.
The study, conducted by Myvouchercodes.co.uk, surveyed over 1000 mothers across Britain with children aged 1-2 years and found that 98% of them experienced broken sleep throughout the first year of their baby’s life, losing on average 2.05 hours a night, which adds up to 31.8 days a year.
Perhaps copies of Fifty Shades of Grey should be handed out in maternity wards for expectant and new mums, to fill the long sleepless nights and maybe help them expand their family to boot.

Although Tamzin won’t admit whether the saucy tale has infused her love life with an extra spark, Babyexpert has previously reported that Professor Ellis Cashmore, expert in Culture at Staffordshire University, is predicting a major baby boom for 2013, saying “By the very nature of the subject matter I’m sure we can expect to see some couples revisiting and reigniting ideas that may have lay dormant for some time in the bedroom.”
With the expected population boost, we also predict a new generation of mothers experiencing sleepless nights and even greater demand for raunchy tales. Author EL James may need to get pen to paper and elaborate on the amorous adventures of Christian Grey et al – given the series’ title we reckon fifty novels in total would just about suffice!
