The model and TV presenter, who suffered horrific burns after being the victim of an acid attack, told the Sunday Mirror: “I just want to shout it from the rooftops. I love children and I’d always hoped I’d be able to have a family. I’m so excited.”

Katie, who has been with her boyfriend for two years, continued: “I'm so happy, and it's been really hard to keep it a secret.”

She has rebuilt her life after surviving being raped by her ex-boyfriend, who later arranged for someone to throw sulphuric acid in her face. Her attackers are serving life sentences in jail for what they did to her.

Since the attack in 2008, Katie has campaigned for burns victims. She started up her own charity, the Katie Piper Foundation, in 2009. It provides support services and advice on rehabilitation. Its patron is Simon Cowell, whose girlfriend is also expecting a baby. Katie said: “Perhaps the children will be playmates one day!”

The story of her attack was turned into a BAFTA-winning documentary, Katie: My Beautiful Face. She is currently in Marks and Spencer's latest fashion campaign, alongside actress Helen Mirren and boxer Nicola Adams.

She has had over 40 operations since her attack, which has left her blind in one eye, and thought she’d struggle to have a family. “I’ve always known that I have wanted children but there were moments after what happened to me that I never thought this would happen, I never believed this would be my future. It’s beyond incredible.”

Later she tweeted: “Overwhelmed by all the congratulations tweets and best wishes! Thank you so much has completely taken my mind of today’s morning sickness! X”
