Seven-year-old raises £100,000 for Haiti

Boy’s sponsored bike ride rakes in thousands

A 7-year-old boy has raised over £100,000 for survivors of the Haiti earthquake by doing a sponsored bike ride.

Charlie Simpson, from London, hoped to raise £500 cycling around his local park in Fulham. In just one day, he'd already collected £50,000, and the total is still rising.

"I just thought it was quite sad when I saw pictures on the TV," said Charlie.

His mum, Leonora, helped him make a sponsorship form, which circulated on the internet and inspired hundreds of people to donate through Charlie's JustGiving webpage.

"He felt really strongly about this and thought that something had to be done," Charlie's mum said. "But what started off as a little cycle round the park with his dad has turned into something a lot bigger than that and we can't believe it."

Donations from Charlie's JustGiving page will go to UNICEF, which is leading emergency relief efforts to provide water, sanitation, education, nutrition and child protection.

I saw this little boy on TV yesterday - it's SO amazing the way everyone has responded and he's done so well. I've just been on his site and he's raised nearly another 50k since yesterday! I hope the cake sale we're holding at my daughters nursery does as well - somehow doubt it!

I saw this on TV as well and think it's amazing that someone of that age has such compassion for others. I hope he continues to get the support her deserves for such a great fundraiser!

I'm sure your cake sale will go fantastically well Ellie! When does it take place? Need any recipes? I'm a big foodie so would love to offer up any yummy cake ideas.....
