Smoking ban cuts asthma attacks in Scottish children

Number of children suffering asthma attacks in Scotland has fallen each year following the introduction of a smoking ban

The 2006 public smoking ban has led to an 18% fall per year in the number of Scottish children who have serious asthma attacks, new research has revealed.

Before the ban was introduced in Scotland, the number of hospital admissions for asthma attacks was rising by 5% a year amongst children under 15.

Critics of the ban argued that smokers would smoke more at home if they couldn’t smoke in other enclosed public places, but it seems this hasn’t happened.

"The evidence we have from Scotland is that it had the opposite effect.

“People are generally more accepting of the need to protect non smokers and vulnerable groups such as children," said Dr. Jill Pell from the University of Glasgow, who worked on the study.

"Children were being exposed to less second hand smoke. We went into the study hoping we’d see some health benefit coming out of that," Dr Jill added.

If you’re pregnant and struggling to kick the habit, find out why it’s so important to be smoke-free in pregnancy.

what have banning smoking in adult pubs and clubs got to do with children and asthma? these are places that children never use to go, so tell us another story, this just sounds like more properganda thought up by ASH and thier health gurus.

i think that its not really looking at the whole story is it? for example, some people may have used the oportunity to give up smoking altogether, therefore causing a reduction in asthma attacks, or perhaps it was just the smokers and their families who were used for the study.

when these reports on studies come out, there really needs to be more information as to the ins and outs of the studies otherwise you could infer all sorts about thge results!

I found it strange that a ban in pubs reduced asthma in children, but then even as a smoker myself as long as there is a decrease, doubt it matters where it stems from as long as some good has come of it!
Maybe it did give many the oppertunity to quit for good, hope so.

the moderators must have removed them, they were a bit too long and boring to read anyway - especially the one which repeated itself about 10 times.
