Nicola Wheeler, who plays Nicola King on the ITV soap Emmerdale, has made a shock announcement as she leaves the soap: she is almost 9 months pregnant!

The 40-year-old actress has just weeks to go before her first baby arrives, yet she and the Emmerdale team have managed to keep her bump under wraps throughout the pregnancy thanks to some clever filming angles!

It's not the only surprise pregnancy news today. Broadchurch actress Olivia Colman has revealed she's pregnant - at the age of 41.

Nicola confirmed her happy news on Twitter as she filmed her final scenes for the show, writing, "Thanks for all your congratulations. Still got a couple of weeks until baby arrives. Unless he/she gets impatient."

Nicola's news is all the more amazing as her exit from the soap centres around her character's devastation at going through the menopause and not being able to have a child.

An Emmerdale insider told The Sun that hiding Nicola's bump had been a "real challenge" for the crew, and that everyone had been very clever in keeping it out of shot. While it's caused a few headaches for the TV crew, the source added that the Emmerdale team were all very happy for Nicola and that it was "wonderful news for her and her partner".

Nicola isn't the only soap star to have been hiding a baby bump on set recently – EastEnders actress Jacqueline Jossa, who welcomed her baby girl Ella into the world last Sunday (despite apparently 'appearing' in the live episodes this week!), also carried on working while heavily pregnant.

Jacqueline tweeted at 6 months to say she was "feeling huge" and that hiding a baby bump on set "isn't easy".

Makes you wonder who will be next. We'll not be able to watch the soaps without wondering what secrets any baggy jumpers or across-the-body bags might be hiding now!
