Star Wars fan, 7, gets George Lucas to change Jedi marriage rule
Worried that as a Jedi he couldn't marry without succumbing to the Dark Side, autistic Colin Gilpatric asked the Star Wars creator for a rule change
Depending on how many times you've watched Star Wars on a rainy afternoon with your little one – or built a Millennium Falcon out of frustratingly tiny Lego bricks – you may have noticed an important part of the Jedi code: Jedi Knights can't get married and have children in case they are drawn to the Dark Side.
But when Colin Gilpatric, an autistic 7-year-old aspiring Jedi Knight, realised this strict rule, he was horrified. How could he become a Jedi if it would stop him from having a wife and little Padawans of his own one day?
So his mum Peggy – dressed as Princess Leia above – suggested he take the issue up with Star Wars creator George Lucas. As we know, if you don't ask, you don't get. So Colin wrote:
"Dear George Lucas,
I don't like that a Jedi cannot get married.
More like this
I want to get married without becoming a Sith.
Please change the rule."
The family didn't expect a reply so were delighted when the following reply came in the post:
"Hello Colin,
Thank you so much for writing to us with your question. It sounds like the Force is strong with you, and you are showing great wisdom by asking your question.
To be a Jedi is to truly know the value of friendship, of compassion, and of loyalty, and these are values important in a marriage.
The Sith think inward, only of themselves.
When you find someone that you can connect to in a selfless way, then you are on the path of the light, and the dark side will not take hold of you. With this goodness in your heart, you can be married.
We enclosed a few gifts that we hope you enjoy. Thank you again for writing to us.

Colin was over the moon that Lucasfilm had granted his wish. "I can get married?" he exclaims in a video shared on YouTube. "No way!"
