Swallowed drawing pin leads to boy's constant colds

X-rays reveal a drawing pin stuck for a year in the lung of coughing 8-year-old Chinese boy

A surprising number of young children swallow small hazards, such as drawing pins, magnets and batteries. Always seek medical advice straight away if you suspect your child may have swallowed something potentially harmful

The parents of an 8-year-old Chinese boy, Xiao Ming, were shocked to discover that the cause of his regular coughs and colds was a drawing pin.

Xiao had been frequently ill for the past year and when doctors gave him a health check, the x-rays showed a drawing pin, stuck in his right lung.

Xiao then admitted that he had swallowed the pin around a year earlier, but had been too worried to tell anyone about it, and so had kept mum.

Xiao’s lung had become withered due to being pierced by the pin but doctors explained that Xiao was in fact extremely lucky as the damage could have been a lot worse. The pin was later removed and he’s now making a good recovery.

What’s the worst thing your tot has swallowed? Tell us below…

I did actually take a drawing pin out of Matilda's mouth at Christmas.Fortunately she didn't swallow it.She eats anything,I've also fished batteries out of her mouth, and a little block of paint from someone's paintbox.

I had two embarassing trips to the hospital, once for a pea up Bridie's nose. They never found it.She did the same again with a bit of chicken the next day and I realised she'd worked out how to "snort" food.Lovely child. She then went on to raisins in the ear and we had another trip to casualty to remove it.Oh and as a baby she ate the fur from her lovely lion's mane.I found that out the obvious way at changing time.Like I say, nice child

Harry ate a metal ball bearing from a game.We assume it was passed unnoticed. He would also eat any powder as a toddler, particularly washing powder, and once Napisan.

Erin ate a packet of birth control pills, but the worse thing she ate was two ibuprofen tablets that'd been in my handbag.I hadn't cleared it out for ages, and had forgotten they were there because I was pregnant so hadn't used them for a while. And then the Rennies.

It's a wonder that child survived

Harry would watch me pour the washing  powder in the drawer and pounce and steal some.

No harm came to any of them.

Anyone would think they were starving
