Ellie Kemper, star of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, is pregnant with her first child, and has confirmed she's going to some pretty extreme lengths to make sure the wee bubba's a genius. Yep, before it's even born.

During an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Ellie admitted she's stocked up on, wait for it, sardines to help build her baby-to-be's brain power – even though she says can't stand the things.

The actress gobbled one of the fishes down on the show when she was presented with a plate of them, and admitted: "I don’t like it! But on the other hand, I can feel baby getting smarter!"

Wow, talk about dedication ?

But is there actually any truth in the idea that eating sardines while you're pregnant can make your baby clever?

More like this

Well, there is evidence to suggest that oily fish, such as sardines, kippers, herrings and mackerel, can be good for your baby's eye and brain development in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.

Though whether that means baby will be joining MENSA by age 4, we can't guarantee.

BUT most experts would agree that you should limit your portions of some oily fish, including sardines, to 2 portions a week because they can contain pollutants (Ellie would probably be quite happy to hear that ?)

We think it's great that Ellie's prepared to go that extra mile and eat something she's REALLY not keen on for the sake of her child. All the best to her and husband Michael Koman as they await the new arrival. Exciting!
