The Government has told parents that toddlers should exercise for at least three hours a day

Under-5s have to exercise for at least three hours a day

This week, new guidelines from the Government will suggest tots get at least three hours of exercise each day Parents are being urged to keep their children active from a young age to help combat the ever growing issue of childhood obesity.

A study by the Department of Health has revealed that 23% of under-5s are currently obese due to little or no physical activity.

“If a toddler spend too much time sitting passively in front of a TV then problems will be stored up for the future” said Professor Dame Sally Davies, chief medical officer forEngland. “The science says that we need our children to have at least three hours of activity a day, physically,” Professor Dame Sally added.

Recommended activities to help keep your child fit and healthy include

  • Walking for at least 15 minutes a day
  • Riding a bike
  • Swimming
  • Skipping

Even babies are expected to exercise on their playmats parents are to “lay them on their backs, let them kick, get them grasping for objects.”
